SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) – Since Fourth of July falls on a Wednesday, many people are hopping on a plane to take the week off for celebrations.
So much so that TSA says today could be one of the busiest travel days of the year.
KRON4’s Sara Stinson is at San Francisco International Airport this morning.
She says today could break TSA security records across the country, and SFO is no exception.Â
The airport is already busy with people trying to get through the security lines before 5:00 a.m.
Many people have several days off this coming week for the July 4th, making it easy for people to take a vacation.Â
TSA officials say the agency usually screens about 2.2 million passengers a day, but today that could top to 2.6 million.
This would be the busiest day since TSA was created in 2001.
Since then TSA has tightened security, requiring travelers to take out all electronics. The agency is working with airports to prepare for the high volumes of people, but expect that security lines will take longer than normal.
If you are leaving town from SFO today, make sure to leave home early! Not only will security take longer than usual, but detours from construction are making the drive in take longer as well.
Good luck and safe travels everyone!
