Western Australian Premier Mark McGowan will travel to Beijing this week for meetings with representatives from government and business.

Last month, the premier defended spending more than $250,000 leading a delegation to China and Japan in November, saying it was a worthwhile 10-day trip to promote the state and secure jobs.

Premier Mark McGowan said the trip was important to building business relationships with the region.

Sixteen people, including ministers and bureaucrats, spent almost $120,000 on airfares, accommodation and “associated costs”, and more than $118,000 on expenses in China alone.

Less than a year later, Mr McGowan said he planned to visit Beijing for the first time as premier from this coming Wednesday to Saturday.

“China is Australia’s biggest trading partner and I want to ensure that WA is in the box seat to maximise opportunities that will create more jobs in the resources sector, as well as industries like tourism and education,” he said in a statement on Sunday.
