Here’s what’s in store in the Indian Premier League today…
Kings XI vs Mumbai
May 4, 2018, 3:00pm
Kings XI Punjab finally get the chance to strut their stuff again over a week after taking their points tally into double figures – victory here would keep them hard on the heels of Chennai Super Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad. Meanwhile, Mumbai’s defence of their title – if it can be called such – continues to splutter and bottom spot remains their domain.
How have the teams gone so far?
Mumbai’s misery is well documented but – to many observers’ surprise – they overcame the formidable challenge presented by Super Kings last week only for thoughts of a miracle revival to be instantly snuffed out by defeat to Royal Challengers Bangalore. So four points from eight games remains their rather dispiriting tally.
Kings XI’s last outing, if you mind can stretch back to the Thursday before last, was a humbling loss to Sunrisers Hyderabad that brought to an end an impressive four-match winning run. To be frank they will not be the last team to crumble against Sunrisers’ high-quality attack but it was rather a waste of Ankit Rajpoot’s incredible figures of 5-14.
Ones to watch
Rajpoot’s return for Kings XI represent the sixth-best figures in IPL history – and at 24, the fast-medium bowler has plenty of time to improve on them. Another swimming strongly in India’s uncapped pool of talent, he has taken his chance determinedly in his three games to date.
Hardik Pandya scoring his first half-century of the tournament this year for Mumbai in the defeat to Mumbai and, while his stats remain modest at best, that might just be the platform that sparks him into life in the latter stages of the round-robin.
