British Transport Police have warned that trains are set to be packed all day

EDINBURGH punters are facing travel chaos today with a number of events putting the strain on public transport systems.

With the Fringe festival in it’s second week, thousands have descended on the capital from far and wide.

And thousands of football fans made their way to Edinburgh earlier on as Hearts beat Celtic 1-0 in the Scottish Premiership.

On top of that, music festival Party at the Palace is on at Linlithgow Loch in West Lothian.

British Transport Police tweeted out a warning that trains were set to be packed.

They said: “Trains will be exceptionally busy today with thousands of you travelling to and from @edfests, @PartyAtPalace and @JamTarts v @CelticFC match.

“If you are out we hope you have a safe and enjoyable day.

“Remember to drink responsibly and #KeepAClearHead #Saturday.”

And the train company later warned rail users that carriages are still packed as commuters, football fans and festival goers made their way to the city.

ScotRail posted: “Heading for Edinburgh? You’re not the only one!

“Our services to and from the city are very busy.

“We’re running extra services and adding capacity where possible.”

But despite the promise of extra room, punters took to social media to complain about chaos on public transport.

One said: “Can ScotRail ever get anything right?

“Been sitting on a train in Waverly for 20 minutes and it’s still not left.”

Another said: “Good on ScotRail putting a two-carriage train from Stirling to Edinburgh at 12.07 during EdFest.

“Customer focused? ScotGov should step in.”

One posted: “Thanks again ScotRail for your impeccably timed cancellations.”

And another punter said: “C*** service again. Falkirk to Edinburgh two carriages and at least 20 people left on platform. We are now late for an appointment with no guarantee of getting on the next train that come in.”

While one wrote: “@ScotRail what a b***** disgrace. 12.07 train to Edinburgh… two carriages. Aren’t you aware the @edfringe is on. Standing room only from Stirling. #getyouracttogether”

Allan Smith said : “Well done @ScotRail. Another comfort free three carriage sweat box of a train on the Fife Circle from Dunfermline. Did anyone tell you incompetents that there was 1. A big match on in Edinburgh and 2. There’s this thing called the Edinburgh Festival in August.”

Another user added: “It’s August. It’s the fringe. It’s Saturday. Scotrail: “We’ll just put three carriages on, everyone loves feeling like a sardine”.

Scotrail have been contacted for comment.
